The Bills and Barkley pull off the unexpected

(WGR 550) - If I’m being totally honest with you the score of the Bills game, 41-10 didn’t surprise me at all. The fact that it was in favor of the Bills shocked me. I never dreamed Matt Barkley could come in pretty much off the street and do what he did on Sunday.

It started with the first play, a perfectly thrown ball downfield to Robert Foster to gain 47-yards. The next play was a 28-yard run by LeSean McCoy and the Bills had a two play-75 yard touchdown drive.

By the time the first quarter ended, the Bills had 186 yards in offense while the Jets had just one. Buffalo also had a 14-0 lead.

There was really only one negative and it was another non caring, casual play by Kelvin Benjamin dropping a touchdown pass. Sean McDermott cut Philip Gaines this past week because he couldn’t stop committing penalties. I applaud that move and I just don’t get why Benjamin wasn’t cut weeks ago for a bad attitude and pathetic play.

The good news is even after that drop, the Bills got a touchdown when Zay Jones caught a pass that resulted in a first down. He fumbled at the one-yard line and Jason Croom recovered in the end zone.

Getting back to Barkley, he led an offense that went 9-of-17 on third and fourth down conversions. The Bills under Barkley rolled up 451 yards of offense while the defense held the Jets to 199.

Barkley was efficient hitting 15-of-25 passes for two touchdowns and no interceptions. It’s amazing what the team can do when it only commits four penalties and doesn’t turn the ball over.

They didn’t turn it over and they didn’t play it conservatively. Barkley had completions of 47 and 33 yards. McDermott called a fake punt from the Bills 47 using former Georgia Tech QB turned tight end Logan Thomas as the up back. He threw a perfect pass and I mean perfect to Foster for the first down.

The team also executed a touchdown pass to left tackle Dion Dawkins. It was so well conceived as Dawkins started blocking his man and then snuck out wide open into the end zone.

The Bills deserve full marks for breaking their four game losing streak where they were getting drubbed on a weekly basis, but this Jets team pretty much has quit on Todd Bowles who may get fired within the next 24 hours. The Jets bye week is coming up which would be a perfect opportunity.

The Bills had outgained Bowles crew by 313 to 68 by halftime. The Jets defense made Barkley look like an All-Pro. The one thing I think that this performance did was seal the fate of Nathan Peterman. Once the quarterbacks are all healthy again, I would think Peterman would be gone. I think Allen and Barkley would be one and two with Derek Anderson staying around to mentor Allen.

Every time the camera showed Allen today, Anderson was right with him talking to him about what they were seeing on the field.

The bye week stops any momentum this win could’ve provided, but Jacksonville is a winnable game at home in two weeks. After that, it’s a trip to Miami and a home game against these same New York Jets. This team has shown under McDermott in the past that it can get off the mat after get their doors blown off, so the next test is how they will do in three maybe four consecutive winable games.
