The Bills pull one out in their first close game of the season

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) - The Bills were methodical in their approach. They simplified things for Josh Allen and didn’t give him too much. It was very boring and Allen only threw for 82 yards, but when the Bills needed him the most, he was there.

It is so tiring watching amateur hour called the Buffalo Bills receivers. Andre Holmes is a great special teams player, but a horrendous wide receiver. Leading 10-9, Allen threw to Holmes who let the ball hit him right in the hands and then be intercepted.

Marcus Mariotta had problems of his own. He threw for 129 yards and appeared to have a touchdown pass to take the lead, but a wide open Nick Williams dropped the ball in the end zone and Ryan Succop had to kick his fourth field goal of the game to make it 12-10, Titans.

That’s when Allen went to work. He started the drive on his own 25 with 4:43 left in the game. On third-and-three, Allen swung a pass out to LeSean McCoy who wiggled through multiple defenders for 13 yards.

Chris Ivory picked up 15 yards on the next three plays and then Allen got the ball down to the Tennessee 33 when he found Ray-Ray McCloud for seven yards.

With three seconds left, Stephen Hauschka trotted onto the field and kicked the game winning, 46-yard field goal as time ran out.

Allen wasn’t asked to do a lot, but he scored the game’s only touchdown early when he took off and dove into the end zone from 14 yards out.

McCoy complained after the Green Bay game that he wasn’t getting the ball enough and McDermott made sure that didn’t happen this week. McCoy had 85 yards on 24 carries which comes out to 3.5 yards per carry. He added two catches for 23 yards so McCoy touched the ball 26 times.

The NFL is all about throwing the ball and picking up yards, but the Bills and the Titans weren’t interested in taking part. The two teams combined for 444 yards of total offense.

Honestly, I’ve liked the Bills defense the past three weeks. In Green Bay they only gave up 22 points to Aaron Rodgers which was pretty good considering how well the Bills offense was doing setting Green Bay up in good position.

Buffalo intercepted Mariota once and sacked him twice. They put a lot of pressure on him, but he escaped their grasp. He did escape, but rarely made plays.

The Bills had two fumble recoveries and Jerry Hughes forced another one by Mariota that went out of bounds.

The Bills are just trying to win games in any way possible. Whether you agree with it or not, the last thing McDermott cares about is entertaining the fans. He’s doing what he thinks is best to win football games.

The way this season has played out I have to admit, I think it’s amazing they’re 2-3. The thing that makes that record look bad is Buffalo got blown out in all three losses. This was actually the first close game of the whole season.

It doesn’t get any easier next week in Houston because Deshaun Watson has been red hot. After the Texans the Bills travel to Indianapolis and then come home for a Monday Night game against New England. I don’t know how it will fall, but my guess is they’ll be 3-5 when half the season is gone.
