Through the eyes of veteran starters in the National Football League, preseason is often seen as a necessary evil to get to the regular season.

As for rookies, it is an important time of development as they prove they belong at the professional level.

Rookie offensive lineman Cody Ford's attempt to prove he belongs will be at a new position for the Buffalo Bills, moving from left tackle to right guard.

In his second preseason game, Ford is looking to take another positive step at right guard after a good first showing last week against the Indianapolis Colts. Against the Carolina Panthers, he may have to do it against two of the best defensive tackles in the NFL.

One will be hard pressed to find a more disruptive defensive tackle duo than Carolina's Kawan Short and Gerald McCoy. There is a combined 87 sacks between the two interior pass rushers, which is the most of any defensive tackle pairing in the league. If McCoy and/or Short play Friday night, it will be a difficult test of what Ford can do against the league's best.

The Oklahoma product will be determined to show he can handle such a challenge, but Friday's matchup will also bring an extra bit of motivation.

The Panthers showed a lot of interest in Ford, meeting with the rookie during the pre-draft process. With a need up front, Carolina leaped the Bills in the second round, with the opportunity to take Ford. Bills general manager Brandon Beane believed the Panthers were about to steal him away with the 37th overall pick, but instead took Ole Miss offensive tackle Greg Little.

As the opportunity to shut down two top-tier defensive lineman and prove the Panthers wrong in selecting Little presents itself, Cody Ford is in for an important Friday night in Charlotte.
