Through the eyes of veteran starters in the NFL, preseason is often seen as a necessary evil to get to the regular season. As for rookies, it is an important time of development as they prove they belong at the pro-level.

Rookie offenisve lineman Cody Ford's attempt to prove he belongs will be at a new position as Buffalo elected to move the former Oklahoma starting left tackle to the starting right guard position.

In his second preseason game, Ford is looking to take another positive step at RG after a good first showing last week against Indianapolis.

Against the Carolina Panthers, he may have to do it against two of the best defensive tackles in the NFL.

One will be hard pressed to find a more disruptive DT duo than Carolina's in Kawan Short and Gerald McCoy. There is a combined 87 sacks between the two interior pass rushers. That is the most of any DT pairing in the league.

If McCoy and/or Short play Friday night, it will be a difficult test of what Ford can do against the league's best.

The Oklahoma-product will be determined to show he can handle such a challenge, but Friday's matchup will also bring an extra bit of motivation.

The Panthers showed a lot of interest in Ford, meeting with the rookie during the pre-draft process. With a need up front, Carolina leaped the Bills in the 2nd round, with the opportunity to take Ford. Bills General Manager Brandon Beane believed the Panthers were about to steal him away. Instead, the selection was Ole Miss OT Greg Little.

As the opportunity to shut down two top-tier defensive lineman, and prove the Panthers wrong in selecting Little presents itself, Cody Ford is in for an important Friday night in Charlotte.
