GAMENIGHT: Sharks 2, Sabres 1

October 12, 2017 - 11:37 pm

The Buffalo Sabres begin their west coast road trip in a funk to start their season, starting 0-2-1 in their first three games. The Sabres start their road trip versus the San Jose Sharks, a team they have had great success against in the last decade.

However, an early power play goal from Tomas Hertl led to the Sharks taking a quick 1-0 lead over Buffalo. Marco Scandella took a slashing penalty just 36 seconds into the game, and the Sabres would fail to kill a penalty for the first time this season. Tomas Hertl was parked next to the net, and the point shot from Kevin Labanc found Hertl's stick.

The Sabres would respond thanks to nice passing from Zemgus Girgensons and Jack Eichel got the puck to Jason Pominville for Pominville's third of the season to tie the game at 1. Girgensons used his speed to get past the defense and drop a pass to Eichel, who quickly dished it to Pominville.

The Sharks re-gained the lead on a goal from Chris Tierney on a great pass from Joonas Donskoi. Donskoi was behind the net and fed the pass to Tierney crashing the net, putting the Sharks up 2-1.

The Sabres drew a penalty late in the first period, as Benoit Pouliot drew the slash from San Jose's Tim Heed. Buffalo could not score on the power play, ending the period trailing 2-1.

0-0 TIE (0:36) - Marco Scandella takes a slashing penalty on the game's first shift, putting the Sabres on the penalty kill within the first minute.

1-0 SHARKS (2:15) - Tomas Hertl is camped next to the net on the power play, making for an easy tap in on the power play.

1-1 TIE (12:16) - Girgensons uses speed to draw defenders, Eichel spins the pass to Pominville to tie the game.

2-1 SHARKS (15:11) - A great feed from Donskoi behind the net finds Tierney, who gives the Sharks the lead again.
