Kelly to receive Jimmy V Award at tonight's ESPYs ceremony

July 18, 2018 - 5:29 pm

The night is finally here. Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly will be taking center stage at the annual ESPYs award ceremony as this year's recipient for the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance.  It has been about a month-and-a-half since Kelly revealed the news at his annual celebrity golf outing in early June, and the wait is finally over for him and his family as well as all of his biggest fans here in Buffalo and around the world.

Kelly is receiving the award for his battle with cancer, which he has been combating since 2013.  Most recently, Kelly has undergone extensive surgeries in both late March and late June; just three weeks ago.

Kelly said the following after he broke the news:

"I am honored to receive the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at The ESPYS. It’s humbling to now be included on the long list of inspirational and courageous recipients of this prestigious award. I’d like to thank The V Foundation and ESPN for my consideration, as well as, for all of the incredible work they do for cancer research. They truly do ‘make a difference today for someone who is fighting for their tomorrow."

As for the list of 'inspirational and courageous recipients' of the Jimmy V Award, Kelly will be joining the likes of former Bills tight end Kevin Everett (2008), ESPN sports commentator Stuart Scott (2014) and TNT reporter Craig Sager (2016).

You can watch the ceremony at 8:00 p.m. on ABC. We will also have live coverage of the evening right here on WGR.
