From the Locker Room: Sabres-Devils

The Buffalo Sabres erupted with five goals in the second period to defeat the New Jersey Devils 5-1 at Keybank Center on Tuesday night.

Blake Coleman was the lone scorer in the first that gave the Devils the 1-0 lead going intothe intermission.  The Sabres then took over beginning with Jeff Skinner beating Keith Kinkaid top corner on the far side.  C.J Smith would score shortly after as his shot trickled past the Devils netminder and crossed the goal line. After that, Casey Mittelstadt found the back of the net, which was followed by a short-handed goal from Jake McCabe. Lawrence Pilut would pack on one more goal before the end of the period.  The goals from Smith and Pilut were their first career NHL goals.

The Buffalo Sabres would would down the fort in the third to earn the 5-1 victory, and hold their place in the current playoff picture.

Let's go inside the locker room to see what Smith, Evan Rodrigues, Pilut, Carter Hutton and Phil Housley had to say after the victory:


C.J Smith: 

On his first NHL Goal: "It was great, nobody really saw it, so I was the only one celebrating, but it was great to get it."

On what happened in second period: "After Skinner scored, I scored then we got a couple rolling in after."


Evan Rodrigues:

On the second period goal eruptiuon: "We played well in the first and wanted to continue that into the second period.  We just ket rolling four lines."

On now losing composure in the first period: "We didnt get rewarded in the first, but sustained pressure in the offensive zone and wearing down the Devils helped us."



Lawrence Pilut:

On his goal: "Reinhart had a great screen in front then me and Ristolainan made some plays on the blue line so it was a good feeling."

On not losing hope after the first period: "We were confident and we focused on our game, We just kept at it and and kept it going."



Carter Hutton:

On getting the victory: "We we have had trouble finding to win games latley, Good to get this one and scoring five goals was huge."

On the Devils goal then calming down after: "Tough first period, especially when they score off of Coleman's skate.  I wasn't called upon a lot, but when I was, we were able to get it done."



Phil Housley:

On the Sabres play: "Total team effort tonight, even when we got down, we stuck with it.  It was good to see other contributions and a short handed goal plus two first career goals, which all points to success."

On Smith's and Pilut's first career goals: "When you play a team game, there's going top be other guys that contribute.  It was good to see them score and help their confidence going forward."
