From the Locker Room: Sabres - Rangers

February 15, 2019 - 10:58 pm

The Buffalo Sabres once again failed to string together a pair of wins, not winning consecutive games since December after their 6-2 loss at the hands of the New York Rangers. Jeff Skinner scored his 35th and 36th goals of the season in the loss, after Buffalo allowed three goals in the third period.

Here are some thoughts from Jeff Skinner, Zach Bogosian, Jack Eichel and Phil Housley after Buffalo's latest loss.

Jeff Skinner:

On Buffalo's poor start, falling down 2-0 after the first period:

"Yea, it wasn't the start we wanted. I thought we came out pretty good in the third and got some momentum off that PP, but couldn't find that one. Obviously, kind of dug ourselves a bit of a hole to get out of, we weren't able to do it."

On the team's defensive lapses:

"You gotta try to limit them as much as you can, we didn't do a good enough job. Obviously, we gave up too much, I thought Linus made some big saves for us."

Zach Bogosian:

On the poor start to the game:

"Obviuosly, not the start we wanted. Being here at home, you have to establish a home-ice advantage and that wasn't the case tonight."

On the team's poor defensive coverage after allowing only five goals in the last three games:

"Plays are going to break down and I think that we have to do a better job of working from the inside out and keeping them to the outside. At times, we did it, but not consistent enough."

On the status of Kyle Okposo, who was injured in a fight in the third period:

"You never want to see one of your teammates get hurt. Great job by him though, not an easy thing to do what he did and, obviously, tip of the cap to him. Like I said, it's not an easy thing to do."

Jack Eichel:

On the team not being able to win consecutive games since December:

"It's tough to really pinpoint it right now. I don't think we had a very good start to the game, maybe we got a little bit back there in the second, then they get a couple in the third. Seems like we're all over them and we had a pretty good push going. Maybe if we get that third goal, it's a different story. But, we don't, it's tough."

On the team's focus following the loss:

"It's important for us to just get back to work and we've got a nice little road trip here. You can really only worry about the next game, I think that's what we need to do now. Obviously, it's frustrating, we would've liked to end our home stand on a better note, but we play New Jersey on Sunday, it's a big game for us."

Phil Housley:

On the team's lack of effort:

"It's very disappointing because I feel like we were taking a step in the right direction."

"You have to understand desperation at this time of the season. And every shift counts, every play counts, the details of the game and that's what's disappointing because you feel we're moving in the right direction and we take a step back."

"We thought it was going to be easy and New York worked, give them credit. They cycled the puck well, we didn't pin a guy in a cycle, we didn't kill a play. We just let them roam and now we're just riding our checks. It just looks like we're soft."

On the status of Kyle Okposo:

"It was unfortunate, I'm glad he stepped up, someone took advantage of one of our guys and he stepped up and we'll know more tomorrow."
