The New England Patriots have a problem at quarterback.

Early in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 33-6 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Cam Newton was pulled in favor of second-year player Jarrett Stidham.

Newton was 9-for-15 passing with 98 yards and three interceptions for a quarterback rating of 39.7. He added 19 yards on five carries on the ground.

Stidham did not fare much better in his time under center, going 6-of-10 for 64 yards and an interception for a quarterback rating of 39.2.

The veteran Newton was not sharp at all with his throws and just didn't seem comfortable with what he was seeing. He and the rest of the offense were clearly frustrated on the sideline.

This is the third straight week where Newton has struggled.

After the loss, head coach Bill Belichick told reporters that Newton would "absolutely" remain the starting quarterback in New England going forward.

The Patriots trailed 23-3 at the half, which marked their second-largest home halftime deficit under Belichick (24 in 2013 vs. the Denver Broncos).

The Patriots will travel to Orchard Park next Sunday to take on the Buffalo Bills at Bills Stadium for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff.
