Report: Bills to place EJ Gaines on IR

August 10, 2019 - 6:24 pm

The Bills are placing cornerback EJ Gaines on Injured Reserve, according to ESPN's Field Yates.

Gaines injured his groin in practice last week, after which head coach Sean McDermott said Gaines would be out "several weeks." By being placed on I.R., Gaines won't be eligible to play until after week eight of the regular season, when the team can decide if they want to use him as one of their two IR-Designated to Return players.

Gaines was originally acquired by the Bills prior to the 2017 season in a trade from the Los Angeles Rams that saw wide receiver Sammy Watkins dealt to L.A.. The 27-year old returned to the Bills after spending one season with the Cleveland Browns in 2018. In Cleveland, Gaines ended up playing in six games before being placed on season-ending injured reserve due to a concussion. He started twice while picking up 13 total tackles, three passes defended and an interception.

With Gaines now out, there's a huge opportunity for for several cornerbacks to move up the depth chart and into the top six group, joining Tre'Davious White, Levi Wallace, Taron Johnson, and Kevin Johnson. Lafayette Pitts, Cam Lewis (from UB), Denzel Rice, and Ryan Lewis now all have a better chance to impress the coaching staff.
