Report: Bills trade Zay Jones to the Raiders

October 07, 2019 - 9:36 pm

It appears as though Zay Jones' career with the Buffalo Bills is about to come to an end.

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, the Bills have traded the third-year wide receiver to the Oakland Raiders in exchange for a fifth round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The team has yet to confirm the move.

For parts of three seasons in Buffalo, Jones has not quite lived up to expectations after being taken in the second round (37th overall) in the 2017 NFL Draft. In 36 career games, Jones has 90 receptions on 194 targets for 1,037 yards and nine touchdowns.

This season has not gotten off to a good start for Jones with just seven catches for 69 yards. In Buffalo's Week 4 matchup against the New England Patriots, Jones was targeted eight times, but only came up with two catches for four yards. However, he was criticized for his lack of effort on two targets to him that were intercepted by the Patriots. He had another pass later in the game that was thrown to him on a 4th-and-goal that went through his hands and ended up falling incomplete in the endzone.

This past week against the Tennessee Titans, Jones was only given one offensive snap in the game after wide receiver Duke Williams was promoted to the active roster from the practice squad. Williams went on to reel in four catches for 29 yards, and also caught the game-winning touchdown to put the Bills ahead 14-7 in the fourth quarter.

Jones' career-year was set last year, where he brought in 52 receptions for 652 yards and seven touchdowns in a full 16-game season.

The Bills and Raiders both head into the bye week this week with Buffalo sitting at 4-1 in the standings, and Oakland sitting at 3-2. Both teams return to action on Sunday, October 20 when the Bills host the Miami Dolphins (0-4) at New Era Field, while the Raiders travel to Green Bay to take on the Packers (4-1) at Lambeau Field.
