Sabres defeat Penguins 10-2 to claim prospect challenge title

September 10, 2018 - 3:44 pm

The Buffalo Sabres have won the 2018 Prospects Challenge. The Sabres needed to win the game by six goals in order to overcome a tie-break scenario with the New Jersey Devils, and were able to use an explosive seven goal third period to do so. Casey Mittelstadt led the way with four assists in the final frame.

The Sabres were leading 3-0 after the second period and quickly secured a fourth goal as the third period opened. Alex Nylander rifled a shot home to start the surge, but the Penguins answered back with two quick goals of their own to make the score 4-2. The Sabres dominated the game from that point on, scoring six unanswered as the Penguins faded. The offense was dynamic, with eight different goal scorers for Buffalo. Both Alex Nylander and Nicholas Welsh had a pair in the decimation of Pittsburgh.

The goaltending was roughly split in half as Jonas Johanssan played the first 31 minutes, while allowing no goals. He was relieved by Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, who allowed both Pittsburgh goals early in the third before settling in. The defense was strong and created chances for the offense, despite 1st overall pick Rasmus Dahlin not playing in the tournament finale.

The Sabres will now look to training camp, which begins on September 13th, with the team looking to bounce back from a last place finish in 2017.
