The Sabres open the Prospects Challenge against New Jersey

September 07, 2018 - 11:40 am

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) - The Sabres have five lines and five pairs of defensemen for the Prospects Challenge. That means some players that have been here for a while won’t play every game.

One player in that boat for tonight is Brendan Guhle. He is being scratched for the opening game against New Jersey along with Arvin Atwal, Devonte Stephens, Tobie Bisson, Shane Eiserman, Judd Peterson and Vasily Glotov.

Jonas Johansson will be in goal. The 2014 third-round pick played 27 games in Cincinnati last season and 14 in Rochester. With the Cyclones he was 14-11-1 with a 3.13 goals against and .909 save percentage. With the Amerks he was 7-6-1 with a 3.33 goals against and .878 save percentage.’

I’m really looking forward to seeing where 2016 first-round pick Alex Nylander is in his development. In two seasons of professional hockey, the 20-year-old has played 116 AHL games and seven NHL games. With the Amerks, he’s struggled a lot scoring just 18 goals and 55 points. He has one goal and one assist in his short NHL career.

Amerks coach Chris Taylor raved on Thursday about how hard Nylander worked over the summer to get himself bigger. He will be on a line with Rasmus Asplund and Andrew Oglevie and will be on the first power play with Casey Mittelstadt, Tage Thompson, Rasmus Dahlin and Lawrence Pilut.

The Sabres will have former R.I.T, star Myles Powell in the lineup. He played 149 games with the Tigers scoring 45 goals and 105 points. He signed a free agent contract with the Amerks.

The Devils will have former Canisius star Ryan Schmelzer in the lineup. He signed a free agent contract with Binghamton.

Sabres lines for tonight:

Hancock  Pekar  Coskey

Aquin  Powell  Cornel
