Pittsburgh, PA (WGR 550) - Conor Sheary played 184 regular season games and another 57 playoff games as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Sheary returns to Pittsburgh for the first time tonight and he said, “It’s a little different, I got a lot of good memories here, but this is a night I want to put that behind me.”

Pittsburgh traded him away, but Sheary wasn’t drafted coming out of UMass-Amherst and the Penguins were the only team that wanted him, “They gave me the opportunity to play in this league and I was able to grow my game with this team, so there are a lot of good memories here.”

Sheary came to Buffalo, along with Matt Hunwick, for a conditional fourth-round pick. He said of course he was mad when he was traded, “You’re not going to be happy when you get traded, it feels like a team is saying they don’t want you anymore, so I was really lucky to get a good opportunity with Buffalo, a team that did want me.”

Most players have nerves when they play their first games back and Sheary doesn’t feel he’ll be any different, “I think so, it’s something I haven’t experienced before and it’ll be fun for sure.”

Phil Housley is keeping everything the same for this game except Carter Hutton is in net. In his last four games, Hutton is 4-0-0 with a 1.42 goals-against and .950 save percentage. Overall, Hutton is 8-6-1 with a 2.51 goals-against and .919 save percentage.

The Sabres have won five straight games and are 9-2-2 in their last 13 games. That has them in third place in the Atlantic Division, three points behind Tampa Bay and two in back of Toronto. Boston and Montreal are one point in back of the Sabres. The Sabres are ranked fifth in the NHL with a points percentage of .650.

Buffalo had killed off 13 straight penalties before giving up a power play goal in Minnesota. Overall, it’s killed off 15-of-16 penalties.

Jack Eichel is back rolling again with three assists in two games. Rasmus Dahlin has five points in four games.

Things have been miserable for Pittsburgh as eight losses in nine games has them in last place in the Eastern Conference. Sidney Crosby has missed two straight games with injury and won’t play tonight. Phil Housley is not expecting a bad Pittsburgh team, “I can tell you they have a lot of pride in that locker-room. Certainly they didn’t want to be in this position and they’re going to try to work their way out of it, they have attention to detail, but it’s what we can control which is the first five minutes at the start of the game.”

Evgeni Malkin hasn’t scored in seven games, but he does have five assists in his last three. Malkin has 25 points in 18 games.

Casey DeSmith gets the call in goal. He’s 3-3-2 with a 2.25 goals-against and .930 save percentage.

Join Schopp and the Bulldog for the pre-game at 6:00 when they’ll be joined by Phil Housley, Conor Sheary and Zach Bogosian.
