For the first time in 2019, a Buffalo sports team dropped a preseason game.

After defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 in overtime just last night, the visiting Sabres fell 4-1 to the Columbus Blue Jackets inside Nationwide Arena this evening. Jake McCabe scored the team's lone goal in the Tuesday night loss.

The scoring got started early for the home Blue Jackets in the opening period of play. Sabres forward C.J. Smith took a slashing minor just 42-seconds into the contest, and Columbus struck 10-seconds later early on their first powerplay. Emil Bemstrom ripped a puck past Linus Ullmark and Buffalo quickly found themselves down 1-0 on the scoreboard.

Thankfully for the Sabres, there was no more scoring damage after the early barrage. Unfortunately, though, the blue and gold were also unable to find the equalizer and broke for the first intermission trailing by that one-goal score.

The score remained 1-0 Columbus all the way through the midway point of the second period, until head coaches Ralph Krueger and John Tortorella opted to make respective goalie changes during a stoppage. Andrew Hammond entered for Buffalo, while the home side welcomed Matiss Kivlenieks into the contest.

With 6:17 to play in the middle stanza, Jake McCabe got the Sabres on the scoreboard with his first goal of the preseason. His shot from the high slot beat Kivlenieks and the game was evened at a goal apiece courtesy of the defenseman's tally. The game would not be tied for long, though, as the Blue Jackets seized their advantage back just over two minutes later. Hammond allowed a goal he'd likely want back off the stick of Columbus forward Kole Sherwood, and that second Jackets goal served as the final score of the second period. Buffalo trailed 2-1 after 40 minutes of action.

The Blue Jackets doubled their lead late in the third period. With 5:38 to play in regulation, veteran Riley Nash fed fellow forward Sonny Milano for a one-time shot that beat Hammond for his second goal allowed of the night. The first multi-goal lead of the night was attained, and the Sabres found themselves up against the wall with mere minutes remaining.

Columbus' Zac Dalpe added an empty-net for good measure with less than 90 seconds left in regulation, sealing the deal on the victory. 4-1 would stand as the final score as Buffalo fell to 1-1 in the preseason.
