Despite 48 shots on net and a 3rd period rally, the Sabres fell short in Ottawa on Thursday 4-2. Buffalo had trailed 3-0 entering the final frame, but Jason Pominville, playing in his 1,000th career game, and Jeff Skinner quickly pulled the Sabres to within a goal, part of a 25-shot period. Craig Anderson, however, foiled multiple scoring chances as the Senators hung on for the win.

A power play goal off the stick of Ryan Dzingel opened the scoring at 6:55 of the 1st period. Dzingel was among a group hacking away in front of the Buffalo net before the puck slid through Carter Hutton's legs and into the net. The Sabres finished the opening frame with several scoring chances, including a Rasmus Ristolainen shot that went off the post, but headed into the intermission down 1-0.

Dylan DeMelo made it 2-0 exactly one minute into the 2nd period on a fortunate bounce. DeMelo's point shot bounced off the back wall, hit Hutton in the back and trickled over the line. Ottawa added another power play goal later in the period on Colin White's 3rd goal of the season. Hutton lost his stick and was unable to recover for White's one-time chance in the slot.

The Sabres battled back in the 3rd with quick goals courtesy of Pominville and Jeff Skinner. Playing in his milestone game, Pominville got enough of a Jack Eichel shot to beat Craig Anderson for Buffalo's first goal of the game. Just a little less than three minutes later, Skinner converted on a deflection of his own, tipping home a Rasmus Ristolainen shot. The Sabres came close to tying the game multiple times -- their best chance came late in the 3rd when Jeff Skinner forced a turnover and walked in alone on Anderson -- but to no avail. Bobby Ryan sealed the Ottawa win with an empty net goal in the final minute.
