You can scratch the name Rikard Grönborg off your wish list of coaching candidates for the Buffalo Sabres.

It was announced on Thursday that Grönborg has been hired as the head coach of the ZSC Lions of the National League in Switzerland.

The 50-year-old Grönborg had reportedly been interested in returning to North America to take a coaching job in the NHL, and it had been speculated that the Sabres were a team that had interviewed with the Swedish National Team head coach. However, he has decided to stay in Europe and sign a two-year contract to coach in Zurich, Switzerland.

Rikard Gronborg's deal with the ZSC Lions is for two years. There are no NHL "outs" in the contract, so the head coach is committed to the Swiss League until spring 2021.

John Vogl from The Athletic adds more to the story, reporting that a source with knowledge of the situation has said that Grönborg was never interviewed by the Sabres for their head coaching vacancy. Vogl also adds that the same source told him that Sabres general manager Jason Botterill has a "strong preference" to hire a head coach with NHL experience.

Botterill is currently over in Slovakia, getting ready to lead Team Canada as one of their general managers for the 2019 IIHF World Championship. Grönborg is also over in Slovakia as he gets ready to coach Sweden as they go for their third straight World Championship title. It was a thought that both Botterill and Grönborg could have met for an interview while in Slovakia about Buffalo's opening at head coach, but now that is not an option.

Some other names that remain an option for the Sabres' head coaching job, or that have been linked to the Sabres includes Dave Tippett, Sheldon Keefe, Jacques Martin, Todd Richards, and Nate Leaman.

Keep it locked to WGR and for the latest on the Sabres' coaching search.
